Drywall Calculator

Plan your sheets, screws and finishing materials in one place.

LET’S WORK IT OUT

Your project estimate

Add your measurements to see an estimate.

A planning estimate for your shopping list. Check your product’s coverage and the needs of your own project before ordering.

A good drywall plan includes more than sheets. Enter the room size, choose a sheet size and tell us whether the ceiling is included. We’ll estimate the boards and the finishing materials that tend to get forgotten.

The cutting allowance is a starting point. Complicated layouts, fire-rated assemblies and different fastening schedules need a project-specific check.

How to use this calculator

  1. Measure the room and decide whether the ceiling is being boarded as well.
  2. Choose the largest sheet size you can physically move into the room.
  3. Calculate, then check the screw, compound and tape estimates so you are not short mid-job.
  4. Plan sheet layout before cutting: stagger end joints and keep factory edges together where possible.

How drywall quantities are calculated

Wall area = 2 × (length + width) × height, minus 21 sq ft per entered door and 15 sq ft per entered window; ceiling area is added if selected. Sheets = area ÷ selected sheet area × 1.05, rounded up. The supporting quantities are fixed planning allowances: 40 screws per ordered sheet, one 4.5-gallon compound bucket per four sheets rounded up, and one 250 ft tape roll per 350 sq ft of area rounded up. They do not specify a fastening or finishing system.

A QUICK WORKED EXAMPLE

A 12 ft x 10 ft room with 8 ft ceilings, one door and two windows has 301 sq ft of wall plus 120 sq ft of ceiling = 421 sq ft. In 4x8 sheets that is 13.2 sheets, which becomes 14 sheets once the 5 percent cutting allowance is added.

A few things worth checking

  • Ordering the exact sheet count with no allowance — one cracked corner or bad cut leaves you a sheet short.
  • Forgetting compound, tape and screws in the budget, which together cost more than a sheet or two of board.
  • Choosing 12 ft sheets for a room they cannot physically reach because of a tight hallway or stair turn.

Your questions, answered

Does this calculator choose drywall thickness?

No. It estimates sheet quantities for the sheet size you select. Thickness, board type, fire or moisture requirements and the fixing schedule must come from the specified board system and the needs of your project.

How are the screw quantities estimated?

The tool multiplies the rounded sheet count by 40 screws per sheet, for every selected sheet size. This is a fixed budgeting assumption, not an installation spacing schedule. Check the actual fixing count for your board size, supports and system.

How are compound and tape estimated?

The tool allows one 4.5-gallon bucket of joint compound per four ordered sheets, rounded up, and one 250 ft roll of tape per 350 sq ft of area, rounded up. These are approximate planning allowances; compare them with your layout and product coverage.

Does the sheet count include waste?

Yes. It adds 5 percent to the area-based sheet calculation before rounding up. It does not optimise sheet placement or offcut reuse, so an awkward layout may need a different allowance.
